Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.
• Remain what you are – friendly, courteous, polite and dignified
• Read up on local conventions and dress appropriately. In many countries, modest dress is important.
• Learn a few words of the local language and use them. Know as much as possible about each country you plan to visit, including its history, religion, geography and government.
• Make a photo copy of your passport and credit card numbers and keep them separate from your passport and credit cards – give a copy to your family.
• Only take the credit card(s) you need – you will not need all those other cards that you generally carry in your country..
• Mark all your bags inside and out with your name and address – both home address and your foreign address.
• Make a photo copy of your flight tickets – keep separate.
• Keep a wallet-sized card with you that includes Emergency Phone Numbers.
• Carry your prescription drugs with you
• If you see an unattended package, move away from it and call the police.
• Be respectful of local citizens’ privacy. Ask permission before entering sacred places, homes, or private land.
• Be sensitive to when and where you take photos/video of people. Always ask first.
• Never carry large amounts of cash.
• Do not bring expensive jewelry with you.
• Respect the natural environment. Never touch or harass animals. Always follow designated trails. Support conservation by paying entrance fees to parks and protected sites.
